The international symposium Longquan: Celadon through Time and Space, organized by the DutChinese Foundation in partnership with the Royal Asian Art Society in the Netherlands (KVVAK) and the Rijksmuseum’s Department of Asian Art, brings together scholars, museum curators, archaeologists, and artists to explore the enduring legacy of Longquan celadon.
Renowned for its luminous blue-green glaze and exceptional craftsmanship, Longquan celadon occupies a distinguished place in the history of Chinese ceramics. Emerging in Zhejiang during the Song dynasty, Longquan ware circulated widely through maritime and overland trade networks, reaching East Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Across these regions, it was traded and used in everyday life, admired and collected as an art form, and interpreted through diverse cultural traditions.
The symposium approaches Longquan celadon from multiple perspectives, including archaeology and technology, kiln organization and production, trade and circulation, histories of collecting, museum practices, conservation, and contemporary artistic reinterpretation. By tracing the movement of objects across time and regions, it seeks to illuminate how Longquan ware has been made, used, valued, collected, and reimagined in different cultural contexts.
Grounded in dialogue across disciplines and borders, Longquan: Celadon through Time and Space invites participants to reconsider the global significance of Longquan celadon and to foster new collaborations in the study, preservation, appreciation and innovation of this remarkable ceramic heritage.
Contributors represent institutions including the China Academy of Art, the Longquan Research Institute, the Longquan Celadon Museum, Leiden University, the Rijksmuseum, Wereldmuseum, the Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics, the Groninger Museum, and Hanze University of Applied Sciences.
