Laura Vermeulen

Independent researcher of Japanese ceramics

Laura Vermeulen studied Japanese Studies at the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven) and then Art History at the University of Groningen, where she followed the curatorial training track as her specialisation. Her master’s research focussed on  the importance of Satsuma export ceramics in the history of Japanese ceramics and their presence in Western museum collections. Her interests focus primarily on Japanese (export) ceramics, with an emphasis on the transcultural and transnational aspects of the Japanese ceramics industry in the 19th century. She is now also exploring the influence of Asian ceramics on the production and decoration of European ceramics.
