Dish on footring, spreading sides, lobed rim. Kraak porcelain, decorated in underglaze blue with a bird of prey perched on a rock near a fruit-bearing peach tree and a flowering plant, above the bird an overhanging pine tree. The sides have two rows of well-defined undecorated pentagonal panels in light relief. This type of impressed side-decoration occurs on small to medium sized kraak dishes, but not on the lampetschotels (large dishes). A similar dish was salvaged from the wreck of the Witte Leeuw (1613) (Pijl-Ketel). The motif of a bird of prey, in flight or on a rock, is also quite common on other types of kraak porcelain. The bird of prey (eagle) symbolises power. Through its allusion to the bird’s power and the longevity of pine trees, it conveys good wishes to an old man. These wishes are further emphasised by the peach, a symbol of immortality. See also cat. 34{} for the double meaning of this motif.
