Dish on footring, spreading sides, lobed rim. Kraak porcelain, decorated in underglaze blue. In the centre a scroll, a double-gourd and flywhisks with ribbons. The sides with two rows of small lotus-petal shaped panels, each divided by a powerful vertical line. Although Rinaldi considers this rim decoration as unique and ‘exceptional’, I believe there are enough similarities for this relatively common design to be classified here under her group 1 (cats. 25 and 26{}). The double-gourd and flywhisk are auspicious Daoist symbols, the scroll a Buddhist symbol. Such symbols occur frequently on kraak porcelain.
