Dish on footring, spreading sides. Decorated in underglaze blue with a kylin in a landscape with rocks and a banana plant. On the base the four-character mark Yutang jia qi (showpiece for the Jade Hall). Brown rim. Later, two characters, Gong Sheng (possibly an owner’s name), were incised under the glaze on the base. As the dish cat. 46, this dish is also made of excellent porcelain, but here the strongly painted representation conforms to the late transitional style. The kylin has been placed boldly in the foreground, making it the centre of attention. The characteristic features of this mythical animal are easy to see: the scaly body, the horned dragon-like head, the cloven hooves, the bushy tail and the full mane. The owner’s name was incised later and is of interest as it proves that this bowl circulated in China (or within the Chinese community in Asia). The rim is brown with iron oxide underglaze and it is unknown if it was functional or ornamental.
