White bulbous jug with narrow neck and ear, decorated in underglaze blue with the weapon of the family Van Vlooswijck. Such a type of jug, with a Dutch family weapon, is not been represented in a Dutch public collection, only a heavily damaged copy in Groninger the museum. There are presently in foreign collections some other copies with the family weapons Geelvick, Valckenier, Outhoorn and the Graeff. It is striking that all now well-known jugs have the same form and that no other objects with these family weapons have existed. Possibly the ewers have had a special function (baptism?). Is possible very probable it has been made for or ordered by Cornelis van Vlooswijck (1601-1687). He has been from 1653 up to its death member of the Council of Amsterdam, and since 1667 trustee for the chamber Amsterdam at the VOC. In that quality he could let make special porcelain on order in Japan.
