Lobed dish on footring, the lobed rim hanging slightly downwards. A chrysanthemum modelled in low relief in the centre. Imari, decorated in underglaze blue, iron-red and gold. In the centre a peony spray, the surrounding petals painted in blue with a flower or a geometric pattern alternating with petals painted in gold. The sides and rim with pine trees, prunus and peony sprays, two cloud-shaped panels with a landscape in red and gold, two of which are in gold only on a background of raised curtains with tassels. The reverse is undecorated. This rare, exuberantly decorated dish imitates a white Delft /… dish{plooischotel?J} dating from the second half of the 17th century. Such Delft pieces must have appealed to the Japanese potter, because he changed the lobes into a kiku-flower (cherry blossom), a traditional motif in Japan. There are other variations of /…{plooischotels?J} dishes in the Shibata Collection (Arita 1998).
