Two plates on footring, flat rim. On the base four spur-marks. Imari, decorated in underglaze blue, iron-red, gold, green and black with two women by a reed border on a riverbank, one holding an open parasol, the other watching three wading birds. Surrounded by a narrow band with flower sprays and blossoms. On the sides three rows of honeycomb motifs, separated by four panels, each with a different bird, and four smaller medallions with the lady holding the parasol. On the reverse seven insects in iron-red. This is a Japanese Imari version of the 'Parasol Lady' made after a design by Cornelis Pronk. This variation is quite common; Japanese underglaze blue versions are more rare. All Japanese pieces with this decoration were ordered privately and not by the VOC. See the comments to cat. 101{}.
