Large dish on footring, wide, slightly upturned flat rim, scalloped edge. Kraak porcelain, decorated in underglaze blue. In the centre a garden landscape with an ornamental rock with large, naturally formed holes (taihu), large flowering plants and birds. The rim and sides divided into wide and narrow panels in light relief. On the wide panels medallions within double-circles containing flowering plants or fruiting sprays; in the narrow panels a small medallion with a jewel on a geometrically patterned ground. On the reverse eight panels with a flower or a fungus (lingzhi). This elaborate and finely painted dish is a perfect example of a ‘classic’ kraak dish. Such large dishes were called lampetschotels (large dishes), a name already used in the VOC archives. Although large enough for a European water jug for ablutions, they were mostly used as fruit or cake dishes and can be seen on many 17th-century still life studies.
