Small barrel on footring, recessed base, the top also recessed with a short cylindrical spout in the middle. Decorated in underglaze blue with a pattern of large chrysanthemums and foliate scrolls. Above and below three bands with a peacock-feather motif, spirals and striped triangles. The exact function of this object, typical of a Dutch collection, is unknown. The shape suggests that it was a pre-modern hip-flask intended for alcohol. Others have proposed that it was filled with hot water and used as a hand-warmer, or to sprinkle rosewater. These functions are obviously related to the shape and assume that it was a liquid container. For such use it had to be filled through the narrow spout with a funnel. Almost all known examples have the same decoration and were probably only made for a short period. The form appears to be derived from a wooden example, the three bands at the top and bottom possibly imitating the (reed?) bands of the original.
