Small saucer on footring, wide flat rim. Decorated in underglaze blue with a striding phoenix in a schematically rendered landscape with a cloud motif. The sides and rim are undecorated. On the base a mark in seal script, possibly shou (long life). Similar, but more elaborately painted saucers were found in the wreck of the Witte Leeuw, a VOC ship lost in 1613 (Pijl-Ketel). The British Museum has comparable examples decorated in underglaze blue and enamel colours. It is possible that this saucer with its undecorated rim and sides was to be decorated with enamels elsewhere later.
