Dish on footring, spreading sides. Decorated in underglaze blue. In the centre a river scene with waterplants and two large flowering lotuses, a flying bird, three others standing or perched on a rock. On the sides four flower sprays, lotus, chrysanthemum, peony and camellia. Brown rim. This interesting and rare dish shows the opposite of cats. 37 and 38: here a kraak-style decoration has been painted on a piece of transitional porcelain. This combination is rare and other examples were not found in the literature. The river scene with water birds is a traditional subject for kraak porcelain, but the painter apparently followed the fashion of the time in his detailed reproduction of the isolated lotus plants. The same decorative style can be seen in the four separate flower sprays on the sides, which are so characteristic of transitional porcelain.
