Bowl on footring, spreading sides and mouthrim. Decorated in underglaze blue. A diaper motif on the outside. Around the mouthrim eight reserved lobed panels with the character shou (long life), flower sprays between. Around the foot eight small flower sprays and lobed panels with a peach. Above the footring a band with lotus-petal motifs. On the inside of the mouthrim a band of diaper motifs, inside on the base a complex decoration. In the centre a rhombic lobed panel with a peach surrounded by a composition of rhombic panels with fungus (lingzhi). In the corners triangular panels with lambrequins surrounded by a zigzag pattern. On the base the six-character mark Jiajing. As the two previous pieces (cats. 55 and 56) and the bowl, cat. 58, this skilfully decorated bowl also belongs to the group of formally painted ware. The shou, the peach and the fungus (lingzhi) all symbolise long life and immortality.
