Beaker on tall, profiled, spreading hollow foot, four sides, the spreading rim divided into four lobes. Decorated in underglaze blue. On the wide sides a river scene with a pavilion and a shelter on poles, on the narrow a flowering plant and insects near a rock. Similar representations on the four bulging panels on the foot. A spiral pattern above and below the horizontal rib on the foot. This elegant, unusually shaped beaker appears to be derived from a Chinese metal or jade example; a Western derivation (e.g., a rummer) seems less likely. Tall beakers on a foot were popular export items, as is apparent from the late 17th-century shipment on the Vung Tau, which included hundreds in various designs (Jörg & Flecker). They were used in The Netherlands as decorative objects and for warm wine and possibly hot chocolate.
