Dish on footring, lobed sides. Decorated in underglaze blue with a pattern of crackled ice, Mount Fuji with a dark, lobed contour, two pine trees in the foreground. The reverse is undecorated. This dish typifies a varied, but barely studied group of Japanese export porcelain that is encountered throughout south-east Asia. It occurs mainly as dishes with simplified decorations that include landscapes, birds, fish and geometric motifs. Harrisson dates this group to the second half of the 18th century. However, in the author's opinion the majority were produced between the end of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century, as there are striking similarities to the easy and abbreviated style on Chinese porcelain of the same period. The few published examples are decorated in underglaze blue and it is unknown if similar decorations were also done in enamel colours.
