Kendi on a short foot with glazed base. The round body with a small spout, a flared neck and an overturned rim. Covered overall with a blue glaze, remnants of scrolls in gold. The rim and the spout secondarily mounted in silver and linked by a chain.
Several examples of kendis fitted with Indonesian silver mounts exist, both in private and public collections. Like large dishes they were considered as heirlooms and their elaborate mounts bear witness to their value and the esteem they were held in. They were brought out at official gatherings and parties, so it is likely that they were not handled very much. The rubbed off gold decoration however suggests otherwise. The kendi was collected in Indonesia.
