Kendi on a short foot with a glazed base. The round body with a bulbous spout and a cylindrical neck with an overturned rim. On the body a continuous landscape with mountains, rocks, houses, trees, two scholars at play, two strolling, their servants behind them, and a man in a boat. On the shoulder a zigzag border, on the neck a similar landscape with a man fishing. The spout with a border of spirals, a ruyi border and one of crosses and circles.
This piece is beautifully painted in a very bright cobalt-blue, the rocks in the landscape evoking a strong sense of three dimensionality. This feature is also seen on some dishes of early Kangxi (1662-1722) date and is referred to as a variation of the Master of the Rocks style. Likewise the zigzag border of fine parallel lines on the shoulder points at a late 17th century date.
