Description

Dish of saucer shape on a channel foot ring. Painted in red, yellow and green enamels on the interior with a central medallion with scattered flower sprays. A border of peony and leaves reserved on frogspawn at the rim. The exterior with three flower sprays.

This dish has a formal border with flattened and stiff peony heads but a large central medallion of scattered flowers. Red and green enamel dominate the colour scheme as is usual in this group of somewhat less formal wares. The channel in the footring is rather wide, a feature that occurred on later dishes with this type of foot ring. A related dish has been recovered from the wreck of the Santo Antonio de Tanna, a Portuguese ship that sunk in Mombasa harbour in 1697. Other related pieces are in the Topkapi Saray in Istanbul. The dish was collected in Indonesia.
