Description

Bowl with flared sides and lobed rim, the base with the six-character mark of Kangxi in a double ring. On the inside in a central medallion a river scene with a human figure under a pine tree. Antiquities and scrolls at the rim. On the outside a landscape with rocks, pines, bamboo and twelve men and servants on the bank of a stream playing the game liu shang qu shi (letting cups float on a crooked stream). The rim and the foot with double bands.

The game on this bowl encompassed the placing of small cups filled with hot wine on lotus leaves floating on a stream. Each participant composes a poem while the cups are on their way. They are recovered at a fixed point for consumption of the wine. This high-quality bowl was probably bought privately.
