Description

Dish of saucer shape with a flared rim, on a footring. The base with a conch-shell in a double ring. In the centre on a ground of spirals five stiff flowers surrounded by twenty radiating panels with upright flower sprays. The back with three lotus sprays.

This type of dish is known among Dutch collectors as the Aster dish, although the flowers have been described as chrysanthemums. It can be related to objects found in the wreck of the Vung Tau (1690) decorated with long twigs with symmetrically placed leaves topped by a flower. This design has been copied in Persian ceramics. Dishes with this decorations are in many Dutch collections. The Topkapi Saray has 18 dishes with this decoration. The dish was collected in Indonesia.
