Pear-shaped jug on a small foot, the neck spreading to a cup-shaped mouth with a pinched spout. The loop handle with a vent hole. Around the sides in underglaze blue on a fond of karakusa (a scrolling plant-like design) three shaped panels with flower sprays in red, blue and green enamels. The neck with bands and scrolls in underglaze blue and red enamel, the handle with scrolls.
The decoration on this piece is done both in underglaze blue and enamel colours, blue included. This relates the object to a group of objects decorated with these colours in Kakiemon style, but not on the Kakiemon milky-white (nigoshide) body. These wares however are generally much more refined. The panelling reserved on a karakusa scroll is characteristically Japanese. The shape was modelled after a faience example and obviously made for the export. The foot again has a feature characteristic for Japanese wares: it spreads and then turns inwards, making a sharp angle. Several examples are known in underglaze blue.
