Description

Mug with bulbous body and broad neck, the handle curved. The silver mounts Delft, dated 1681. On the body in three lobed panels, separated by karakusa (a scrolling, plant-like design), landscapes with hills, trees, pavilions, flying birds, and a bunch of long-stemmed flowers suspended in the air. Below the rim and on the handle a karakusa.

This mug for drinking beer is modelled after a European pewter or stoneware prototype, beer being the usual drink in the 17th century. These mugs were shipped to Holland as of 1662. This type was made in various sizes. The curious decoration of a bundle of long-stemmed flowers suspended in the air is also painted on other wares like ewers but its meaning is as yet unclear. These mugs are to be found in a number of collections. The marks in the silver cover provide a convenient dating tool, although marks cannot always be relied on as they could be faked.
