Description

Dish with a flat rim, on a glazed footring. The base with a broad iron-washed band around the glazed centre and traces of a kiln support. Carved under the glaze, in a central medallion framed by an elongated key-fret border a pattern of large leaves. A double bracket-lobed line on the rim. Covered overall with a celadon glaze.

The late 17th century name celadon, derived from the colour of a shepherds cloak in a 17th century French play, was given to a green glaze that can show many different tones on stoneware produced in China, mainly in the Longquan kilns in Zhejiang. It was imitated in Arita when the Chinese production faltered in the middle of the 17th century and exported to Southeast Asia where it was much in demand. The decoration on this dish does not follow a Chinese example but seems to be of Japanese origin. Dishes like this one were produced at the Maruo kilns. The dish was found in Mindoro, The Philippines.
