Description

Bottle of square form with a flat, unglazed base, slightly spreading sides, angled shoulder and flared neck. On the sides in red, green, yellow and aubergine enamels and black outlines on one side within a rectangular panel a man in a boat, on the opposite side in a similar panel a man and a child in a rocky landscape. The other sides with scrolling ruyi.  Around the foot a flower scroll, on the shoulder, reserved on various diapers oval medallions with flower sprigs, at the base of the neck emblems and  upright banana leaves around it.

This charming bottle is painted with pale, somewhat washed out enamels, a characteristic of polychrome wares of the Chongzhen era (1628-1644). The rather sketchy designs convey a spontaneity that was very appealing to the Japanese. The shape of the vessel derives from a Dutch prototype in glass or stoneware schnapps bottles.
