Tall cup, two handles in the shape of a dragon attached below the out-turned rim. The base with a fuku (good luck) seal mark. The interior decorated with a flame border at the rim. On the outside a continuous river scene with mountains, pavilions, trees, and clouds.
The shape of this cup appears in the Jiajing period (1522-1566). The handles were obviously made in a simple mall with one flat side. The potter made the mistake of selecting two handles of the same shape so looking from one side the cup has a handle in relief and a flat one. The decoration of lonely pavilions in a landscape could have Daoist connotations and refer to the blessed abode that awaits those who follow the 'Way of the Ancient Kings'.
