Jar of monumental form, barrel shaped, the short, curved neck with a rounded rim. The base with a pared foot ring. On the sides, separated by stylized tulip motifs, in four oval medallions scholars, one on horseback, and attendants in a landscape. A border with mountains, smaller figures and boats above and below. Around the foot and the neck stylized floral scrolls.
The painting on this monumental jar is very bold, almost carelessly executed. A cobalt blue of various shades is applied in hasty brushstrokes without much attention to detail. The cobalt has formed opaque areas underneath the glaze. Body, glaze and painting style suggest a production at Dehua, Fujian province rather than at Jingdezhen. The scene is not identified. This jar was collected in Indonesia.
