Description

Cylindrical vase with a trumpet-shaped neck, the base unglazed. Around the foot and the shoulder incised scroll borders. On the sides a fan painted with a landscape, a gourd vase with a ruyi staff, a gu-shaped flower vase with a stone wall-pattern on a low table, a bowl with fruit, and book rolls. The base of the neck with upright pointed leaves.

The gu-shaped vase in the decoration is modelled after an ancient bronze vessel, the stone wall-pattern on it probably suggesting the surface of the bronze. Objects referring to Antiquity were fashionable on porcelain during the late Ming (1368-1644) and early Qing dynasties (1644-1911). Fan-shaped cartouches with small landscapes likewise are a decorative device. Vases of this shape, also called rolwagen, with trumpet-shaped neck were part of the Hatcher cargo (c 1643).
