Description

Kettle of globular form with S-shaped spout, overhead square handle with vent, and domed cover with finial. On the sides, divided by clouds, a farewell scene between two military figures in a landscape. The shoulder with floral sprays, the handle and spout with clouds.

The decoration shows the v-shaped grasses, here placed as a surface on which one of the figures stands, a characteristic of better Chongzhen wares. Other features like the rocks used as a backdrop and the layering of the rocks in various shades of blue are also typical of the period. Kettles were used in China for hot rice wine and water. They were also shipped to Holland, but their use there is not clear as tea-drinking was not yet fashionable at the time. The scene is not identified.
