Description

Bowl, called klapmuts, with rounded, moulded sides and a flat, upturned, lobed rim. On the inside in a central star-shaped medallion bordered by maze diapers, a frog on a rock. On the well and the rim, treated as a single space, four panels containing lobed cartouches with emblems, and maze diapers flanked by scrolls, divided by narrow panels with tied ribbons. On the outside in similar cartouches peaches, three formal flowers under the rim.

The name klapmuts may be derived from the shape of a Dutch hat. Almost half the cargo of the Mauritius, sunk in 1609 on the west coast of Africa on its journey home consisted of klapmutsen. They appear on a drawing of the log of the Gelderland, dated 1601-1603 and a painting by N. Gillis dated 1601 shows a klapmuts. They remained in production until the middle of the 17th century. The painting is of a good quality as is the colour, which makes a date in the first decades of the 17th century for this charming piece possible.
