Dish with rounded sides and everted rim with raised lip. The base with glaze spill, the foot with some kiln grit. On the interior, within a bracketed medallion, in white slip on a brown glaze a qilin seated amidst flowers, grasses and flames. The well with two horned, winged dragons, each chasing a flaming pearl. On the rim chrysanthemum and prunus sprays and leaves. The reverse plain.
The swiftness of the design on this dish with the movements of the dragons and the clouds makes it very attractive. Dishes with white slip decoration on an iron-brown background were popular in Japan. They are in several Japanese private and public collections. This dish was acquired at Sumatra, Indonesia.
