Dish with rounded sides and everted rim with raised lip. The base with glaze spill, the foot with kiln grit. The interior with a centrally placed flower in brown slip on a light blue glaze, surrounded by feathery leaves in a violet blue slip. The moulded well fluted. The reverse plain.
This is a dish of a stunning and rare colour, decorated with a single flower said to be a flower of the papaya tree, a motif that was very popular in Indonesia. The background colour of this dish is achieved by applying a blue glaze over a white one, a method used on all blue-ground Zhangzhou dishes. It has been suggested that the area to be decorated was first scraped of, then refilled with brown and finally the dish overall covered with the blue glaze. The dish was acquired at Sumatra, Indonesia.
