Dish of saucer shape, the base with glaze spill and kiln grit. On the interior in red, green and black enamels a circular medallion with an Arabic text, encircled by another text. On the sides eight smaller medallions with Arabic texts, further texts between them. Below the rim a band of texts and a double line. The reverse plain.
Indonesian collectors call this design Aceh. It has been suggested that this type of dish was probably commissioned for the Aceh Sultanate in northern Sumatra, famous for its Islamic piety since the 15th century. The design of this dish would be based on the royal seal of the sultan. In the centre the inscriptions Shah and Akbar are written, around the sides in the roundels: 'There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet', and: 'I beg Allahs forgiveness'. The names of the prophet and his disciples Abu, Bakar, Omar and Ali are also written. This type of dish was used for serving food at traditional Indonesian feasts, the largest size being for the most important guest. A similar dish is in the Topkapi Saray. This dish was collected in Indonesia.
