Description

Dishes of saucer shape, the glazed base with kiln grit. On the interior in red, green, turquoise and black enamels a medallion with two mating phoenixes on a rock near a giant peony and bamboo. The well with five or six ogival medallions on a block diaper ground, filled with flower sprays and separated by two half-flowers linked by an emblem, alternatively by a roundel. The reverse plain or with scrawls, circles, and peony sprays.

The central scene is inspired by Jingdezhen Jiajing (1522-1566) dishes. It is similar to blue and white dishes. The diagonally placed diapers typically appear on polychrome dishes. These diapers combined with solid red roundels can be found on polychrome wares of the Jiajing (1522-1566) to the Wanli (1573-1620) era. They are also found on Zhangzhou wares with other forms like jars and kendis. Both are in the Jan Menze van Diepen collection in Slochteren. The Princessehof has several jars with this decoration. Fragments of dishes with similar border designs have been unearthed from the Mount Wanyao kiln site in Wuzhai, Pinghe county. The flowers painted in the ogival medallions appear on a shard found in the historic centre of Mexico city. This dish was collected in Indonesia.
