Description

Dish of saucer shape, the glazed base with kiln grit. On the interior, within a border of scrolling lotus, a wall with a central gate, human figures and pagodas behind it. In the distance a rocky island, in the foreground a boat, a lobster and a fish rising from waves. Around the sides against a ground of segmented waves eight bracket-lobed medallions enclosing a prancing human figure alternating with Arabic writing reading Allah afi and Allah shafi, meaning 'God who heals' and 'God the Healer' respectively, separated by narrow panels with ribbons and tassels. On the exterior scrawls.

With its central scene referring to marine life this dish belongs to group III. The panel decoration is derived from Kraak examples, however the coastal scene with the lobster and the fish jumping out of the water, and the mountain range in the background is reminiscent of early transitional landscapes. It has been suggested that this kind of dish might have been produced for foreign customers who had dishes with this rather rare decoration made according to their wishes. This dish was collected in Indonesia.
