Description

Dish with rounded sides and flared rim with bracket-lobed edge. The foot and the glazed base with kiln grit. On the inside in a central medallion two spotted deer under a pine tree among bamboo, grasses, insects, and flying bats. The well plain and the rim bordered by eight quatrefoil medallions with flowers set against a background of scale diapers alternating with Y-shaped and diamond diapers. On the reverse between bands peach sprays alternating with cash emblems, four fruiting sprigs below the rim.

This dish, belonging to group II, faithfully copies a design popular in the Jiajing period (1522-1566) made in the Jingdezhen kilns. Shards with this design have been found in the Erlong and Dalong kiln sites in Wuzhai, Pinghe county dating from the Wanli period (1573-1620). Styles obviously didnt change at the same pace in provincial kilns as they did in Jingdezhen. The deer have been painted in a rather unnatural angular style but in the landscape attention is given to naturalistic detail. Dishes with similar or other central scenes and identical borders are in the Museum Nasional in Jakarta and in private collections in Indonesia. This dish was also obtained in Indonesia.
