Dish with small, rounded rim, the foot and the glazed base with some kiln grit. On the interior in a central medallion a bird of prey in a plantain tree amidst honeybees nests and leaves. Around the well two opposing peony sprays, the rim with a leaf border. The exterior with similar sprays.
This lively depiction of a bird trying to reach the honeybees nests for a meal attests to the creativity of the Zhangzhou potters and the variety in the designs. The fine outlines filled in with a wash of underglaze blue make this dish belong to group II. It is however a rather crude representative of this group which usually shows designs taken from fine Jingdezhen examples of the Jiajing (1522-1566) and Wanli (1573-1620) periods. The dish was collected in Indonesia.
