Jar with cylindrical body, angled shoulder and a thickened rim, the base mostly glazed. On the body a fahua-type decoration of lotus flowers and leaves, outlined in trailed slip and filled in with white and turquoise enamels on an aubergine ground. On the shoulder a petal border filled in with green and amber yellow, around the base a green band.
The stoneware body of this small, sturdy jar covered with a white slip suggests that it was made in the north of China. The glazes on these northern bodies have a tendency to flake of because they are thinly applied and do not match the body material very well. The boldly rendered lotus flowers on the sides create a powerful design.
