Description

Box and cover of square shape, the cover slightly domed, the base unglazed. The inside with a partition and glazed white, the outside with a bundle of lotus flowers and buds, scattered leaves and grouped dots in white slip on a blue glaze.

Slip decoration on a monochrome blue or toffee-brown glaze was introduced in the Wanli period. The ware was both made in Jingdezhen and in the South in Pinghe and Dehua, Fujian province. Boxes were very popular objects, many were produced during the reign of Wanli. The rather complicated shape of this box with a partition and an overhanging rim on the inside, combined with a smooth glaze and a neatly bevelled base could point at a manufacture in Jingdezhen. This type of box may have been used for fans.
