Description

Standing human figure on a cylindrical plinth, the base unglazed, the back with a square vent-hole, another one in the plinth. The bearded and moustached figure representing a dignitary, wearing a cap with pendant ribbons and a long belted robe, holding an instrument to his chest. Around the plinth rocks, waves and clouds.

The figure could be a representation of the Immortal Lu Dongbin, who is often portrayed with a cap and a beard, carrying a fly brush. He is the patron saint of the barbers and the sick also direct their prayers to him. There is fritting of the glaze visible on the edges of the robe and plinth. This could indicate that the figure was made in the later Wanli period.
