Description

Bowl with rounded sides, on the base in two rows the inscription Jiajing bingyin nian zhi (made in the bingyin year of Jiajing [January 21st  1566 - December 9th 1567]). On the interior in a medallion a lotus, the rim edged with bands. The exterior with herons in shallow water among flowering lotus.

This reign-marked and dated small bowl came from Java. Dated inscriptions occasionally appear on Jiajing porcelain. Herons and other waders in shallow water among lotus typically appear in border patterns of the period, they are less common as a main decoration. The deep cobalt-blue colour is characteristic of wares of the later Jiajing reign. This bowl was acquired in Indonesia.
