Melon-shaped jar on a heavily-potted footring, with an upright mouthrim. Decorated in underglaze blue with swirling wave motifs and scattered petal motifs on which lobed panels with formal symmetrical flower sprays, on the shoulder a white band with pendent leaves, round the mouthrim the characteristic small flowers and scrollwork. The motifs, the shape of the panels, the petal motif on the shoulder and the flowers are unusual and suggest a Middle-Eastern or European influence, possibly a textile design. Melon-shaped jars were part of the assortment of shapes produced at the end of the 16th century during the Wanli period (15731619).
