Detailed description

This vase, exceptionally large for Longquan Celadon, has a shape called yen yen in China. Longquan Celadon was produced in the Chinese province Zhejiang and was one of the most celebrated types of Celadon. Celadon is a Western term used to denote Asian stoneware with a characteristic light green glaze. The green colour is achieved by reduction firing (whereby oxygen in the kiln is reduced) of an iron-containing glaze. An almost identical, dated example is in the Percival David Foundation in London. According to the inscription this vase was made for a Buddhist temple in 1327.
