Description
Kraak porcelain is characterised by its decorative scheme of alternating wide and narrow panels filled with auspicious symbols or flowering plants. This bowl has an extremely rare panelled decoration. All six panels contain a seated Chinese lady, depicted in white against the blue rocks in the background. The figures are painstakingly painted and the blue is, especially for Kraak porcelain, particularly beautiful having many nuances. The same approach white decorations on a blue ground has been used for the scrolls between the panels. This reserve technique was frequently used in the Kangxi period (1662-1722), but is rare on Kraak ware. The splendid decoration in the centre of the bowl of a tiger is a much more conventional decoration on Kraak porcelain.
